What must an accessibility statement contain?
Annex V of the European Accessibility Act asks service providers to explain how their service meets the accessibility requirements. A good statement for an online shop covers:
- The standard you follow: EN 301 549, which includes WCAG 2.1 level AA (WCAG 2.2 AA is the current best practice).
- Your compliance status: fully, partially or not compliant. Be honest: "partially compliant" with a list of known issues is far better than a false claim.
- Known limitations and what you are doing about them.
- How and when the statement was prepared (self-assessment, audit) and when it will be reviewed.
- A contact for accessibility feedback and requests for information in an accessible format.
- The enforcement body customers can turn to.
Where should I publish it?
On its own page (for example /pages/accessibility), linked from your footer on every page. Some shops also reference it in their terms and conditions.
Is a statement enough to comply?
No. The statement describes your situation; the law requires the shop itself to be accessible. Use the statement as a starting point and fix the issues it lists, starting with the most severe ones.
