Why it matters: Under the European Accessibility Act, businesses must publish information on how their service meets the accessibility requirements (Annex V). An accessibility statement page is the standard way to do this, and it is often the first thing regulators and complaint-filers look for.

Why it matters: Low-contrast text is hard or impossible to read for people with low vision, colour blindness, or anyone on a phone in sunlight. It is the most common accessibility failure on online shops.

How to fix: Make normal text at least 4.5:1 contrast with its background, and large text (24px, or 18.5px bold) at least 3:1. Usually this means darkening grey text, or darkening the button colour behind white text. Check pairs with a contrast checker before changing your brand palette.

On Shopify: Online Store → Themes → Customize → Theme settings → Colors. Adjust the text, button and badge colour schemes; sale badges and "compare at" prices are frequent offenders.

Why it matters: People who navigate with a keyboard (many motor-impaired and blind users, and power users) need to see where they are. When a link or button looks the same focused and unfocused, they are lost on the page.

How to fix: Give every interactive element a clear focus style, for example a 2px outline in a contrasting colour. Never remove the outline (outline: none) without replacing it. In CSS: a:focus-visible, button:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #1a56db; outline-offset: 2px; }

On Shopify: Edit code → assets/base.css (or theme.css): search for "outline: none" or "outline: 0" and add a :focus-visible style. Many themes also have a "focus outline" colour under Theme settings.

Automated tools can't judge everything. Do these yourself on your homepage, a product page and checkout:

Keyboard only: unplug your mouse. Can you reach every menu item, choose a variant, add to cart and reach checkout using Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter and Space? Is the focused element always visibly highlighted?
Pop-ups: can the newsletter or cookie pop-up be closed with Escape or the keyboard, and does focus go back to the page?
Zoom: zoom the browser to 200%. Does everything still fit and work without horizontal scrolling?
Screen reader: turn on VoiceOver (Cmd+F5 on Mac) or NVDA (free, Windows) and listen to a product page. Are product name, price, variants and the Add to cart button announced clearly?
Errors: submit the checkout or contact form empty. Are errors described in text (not only in red), and placed next to the field?
Media: do product videos have captions? Does anything auto-play for more than 5 seconds without a pause button?
